Design Your Life!

Jul 04, 2021

You have more control over your destiny than you realize.

So many people feel stuck in their career, life situation, town, and so on because they don't believe they can change their lot in life. But, excitingly, that seems to be changing with more folks starting businesses or changing careers after covid. People opt for stable hours, better pay, better jobs, better treatment at work, and better quality-of-life post-pandemic.

What happens if you don't feel like you control the directing of your career and personal life? People feel stuck in jobs they don't love. Folks feel helpless to improve their situations. Employees continue to feel unappreciated by employers and customers alike. In many ways, it may continue depression, dissatisfaction with your work, or frustration with the status quo.

The folks who believe they can improve their lives and act on them are the ones who transform into their ideal life. They decide to change, working a plan, and getting after it - all things we celebrate here at Start Your Week With A Coach! So if that's you, keep going. We are cheering you on!

If you're not there quite yet, I'm cheering you on too. Now's the time to dream big, to reflect on what you want to create in your life, and to start making the plan to make it all happen. Of course, it all starts with designing your ideal life.

"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition." - Steve Jobs

It's a tricky topic because everyone has a unique idea of what that is for them. Plus, sometimes, you need some life experience to figure it out for yourself.

That's what happened in my career the past 20 years. I didn't exactly know what I wanted to study in college, but I thought business school would give me a core set of transferable skills while I figured it out. Graduate school was more specialized in technology and business, which felt closer to what I wanted to do. My first job out of grad school was computer programming for Wal-Mart Inc. The work was fun, though it was stressful for many reasons. Being on call irregularly messed with my sleep schedule; arbitrary deadlines seemed aggressive and added stress. It was a pretty shocking shift from college when you got to choose your projects and timelines.

During that time, I realized I loved the people part of technology. Working with other teams, communicating between the business folks and tech folks, solving communication problems, and the like. Thus, grad school provided another hint for what might be fulfilling in my career.

This pattern repeated throughout my career. Get into action. Figure out what you like and don't like. These experiences formed the basis for designing the life I wanted. Problem-solving, mentoring, leading teams, and running my own business. It's why I coach and why I absolutely love my job!

That's where we want to get you, where you love your job and life! So how can we get there? Here are five ideas to design your life:
  1. What is your ideal lifestyle?
  2. What would your perfect day look like? (Career-wise, family-wise, socially)
  3. What income or resources would you want or need to live that ideal life?
  4. What quality-of-life things would need to be present for that ideal future?
  5. What contribution and service would need to be there to feel completely fulfilled?

I love these questions because it gets us thinking about more than our careers. It causes us to think about how we would need to contribute to our families, communities, and organizations to feel fulfilled. Once you have your ideal future designed, a funny thing happens. You feel more confident making decisions that move you closer to realizing your dream.

So do the reflection and design your life. And plan out ONE move or step to get you closer to that ideal future. Design your life to live into your full potential and joy.
